Hello? Anybody out there?

Sometimes, it's weird posting things when you know that nobody is reading them. Well, Julie Powell continued to post even though nobody was reading her blog, and now look at her. She has a movie. So, I am not going to let my lack of followers get me down. If you are reading this, please tell all your friends about my blog, both vegetarians and bacon-lovers alike.

Well, this post seemed pretty unproductive, so here is a brief run-down of another day in the life of a fun size vegetarian:

Breakfast: Multi-grain bagel thin
Lunch: N/A
Snack: Granola bar
Dinner: Kashi Spinach and Mushroom pizza with 7 whole-grain crust
(PS: If you've never had this pizza, you're missing out big time!)
Dessert: 1 Peep. Sadly, only 1, because I only had one left. I'm kind of a peep addict.

Peace!

Cherry Cheesecakes, aren't they pretty?

I love cheesecake. It's kind of a guilty pleasure of mine (and also one of the reasons I am not a vegan!) Along with making cheesecakes and, well, eating them, I also like taking pictures of food. It is a passion of mine. I once documented the "art of pasta making" through photos. Like I said in my previous post, I hope to start posting lots of food pictures on here, from vegan bread to cookies to salad. Who knows? Maybe one day I will become a food stylist.
Tomorrow, I am making Russian Black Bread for my European History class. I'll try and post the pictures once it is done!

Is my picture making your mouth water? Click here for the recipe! (What, you don't like cooking? Don't worry, they are super easy!)

Vegetarian Meals

One hope I have for this blog is to occasionally post a day's worth of vegetarian meals that I enjoy. I also want to post pictures of the food. But since I am new to the whole blogging thing, I didn't really think of taking pictures until after I ate. So, here is an generally idea of what you might see regarding vegetarian food (minus the pictures):

Today's Meals:
Breakfast: Scrambled eggs with red bell peppers+orange juice
Lunch: N/A
After school snack: Carrot sticks
Dinner: Mixed salad containing 3 types of lettuce, orange bell peppers, mushrooms, green onions, cherry tomatoes, carrots, radishes, cabbage, and cucumbers+whole wheat spinach and tomato pasta with a light herb sauce.

Yum!

First post!

So, after many contemplations regarding my first blog post, I settled on this: Why I became a vegetarian.

It all began in my high school foods class. As we approached the vegetarian unit, I had already been thinking about doing "Meatless Mondays" in honor of National Vegetarian Month. So, I was exciting to explore vegetarian foods in class. We made a vegetarian stir fry, and it was fabulous. I was excited to cook it on the following Monday. For the end of the unit, we had to watch Food Inc. For those who don't know what it is, it is a documentary exploring factory farms and, essentially, where your food comes from. I will admit that it brought me to tears. It was disgusted with everything about factory farms, from the cleanliness to the working conditions to, most importantly, the horrible lives that the animals live.

They are kept in dark, dirty factories where they don't even have enough room to turn around. They are fed unhealthy diets, which include drugs that cause them to grow at faster rates, so they can be killed faster. Ah, and now we come to the killing. I wish that I could say that they were put to sleep, but sadly, the answer is no. Ever think about where your chicken McNugget was killed? Well, they are first beaten, and then locked up in tiny cages where they are shipped (very roughly, resulting in countless injuries) to the slaughterhouse, where they are hung by their feet, beaten some more for the worker's entertainment, and then submerged in scalding water. Seriously, would you like to die that way? It sounds like a horror movie!

Now, if you aren't a vegetarian, then I want you to know I am not trying to influence you to eliminate meat from your diet. Just stating the facts here.

So, as the movie concluded, I vowed to never eat meat again. I never wanted to put another tortured animal in my mouth. I no longer saw a steak, a chicken wings, or a strip of bacon. I saw an innocent little animal, crying out for my help. Supporting the factory farms, which I now call the murderers, by consuming meat seemed inhuman and sadistic. So, I make one of the biggest (and best) decisions of my life. I became a vegetarian, and I am loving it 100%.
